June 10 “Something in the Water” based on the novel by Peter Scott
Jim Hunter, our local high school science teacher, and his team of students know that “Something in the Water” might be lurking below the surface of Portage Lake. They are very worried that our way of life on the lake could change forever. You will learn how for 17 years Jim and his students have tested the quality of our lake water.
June 24 “Where the Wild Things Are” based on the novel by Maurice Sendak
Marilynn Smith, an esteemed mycologist and a high school and college professor, will present “Where the Wild Things Are”. She will teach us which Michigan mushrooms are edible and which are poisonous. We will learn to show more respect for fungi and the role they play in our lives. Let the wild fungus rumpus begin!
July 8 “Diamonds Are Forever” based on the novel by Ian Fleming
At a “Diamonds Are Forever” reception we will honor 75 successful years of The Portage Lake Garden Club with a collage of pictures, interviews with members, and a memoir by honorary life member, Tom Gerhardt.
July 22 “A Walk to Remember” based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks
On our home and garden tour “A Walk to Remember” we will view gardens where dreams have become realities. Like first loves our gardens hold a special place in our hearts.
August 5 “The Deerslayer” based on the novel by James Fennimore Cooper
You don’t have to resort to being “The Deerslayer” to keep the deer away from your favorite shrubs, flowers, and trees. Our own talented Carol Tamulis will help us learn some tricks to deer-proof our yards.
August 19 “On the Beach” based on the novel by Nevil Shute
“On the Beach” the dunes provide a physical barrier against storm waves, reduce the risk of flooding for nearby properties, and are a home to many plants and animals. An Interpretive Park Ranger from Sleeping Bear Dunes will discuss dune formation and dune plants.
September 2 “Summer's End” based on the novel by Danielle Steele
After an amazing summer of gardening and garden club programs, we’ll all be wishing that summer would never end. Come at 5pm to this circa 1935 “Summer’s End” party at president Jane Mueller’s to reminisce and brainstorm ideas for garden club events for 2011.
